Editing a student's placement in Imagine MyPath

Note

This article applies to the following products:

  • Imagine MyPath Math
  • Imagine MyPath Reading
  • Imagine+ Math Beta

Teachers and Administrators can easily edit a student's placement in Imagine MyPath from the Student Placement page. This process allows you to update not only a student's overall placement grade—which helps determine the lessons included in their learning path—but also important settings that customize their instructional experience.

While editing placement, you can also:

  • Lock the placement to prevent future assessments from automatically changing it and the content of a student's learning path.
  • Enable a content bridge that provides a condensed set of lessons from the student's rostered grade before advancing to higher-level content.

These options let you tailor the learning path for each student, ensuring it best matches their needs and learning goals.

 Note

You can also change a student’s placement grade directly from their Student Progress report.

When to edit a student's placement

Consider editing a student's placement, including adjusting the placement grade or enabling the learning path settings, in these situations:

  • The assessment did not accurately reflect a student's abilities (e.g., test anxiety or distractions).
  • The student finished their current learning path or needs to be placed in a higher grade to be challenged.
  • The student routinely struggles with lessons. While MyPath automatically adapts based on performance, a manual placement change (with an optional lock) may provide a better experience.
  • You want to override an automatic, assessment-based placement due to classroom observation or other instructional data.
  • You want to ensure that a student's placement remains fixed (by enabling Lock Placement), preventing future assessments from changing their learning path.
  • You are placing a student in a higher grade and want them to complete a condensed set of lessons from their rostered grade first (by enabling Content Bridge).

To change a student's placement grade:

  1. Log in to the Product Portal and select the desired product.
  2. Navigate to Student Placement page. Click the tab below that corresponds to your user type for instructions on how to access that page.

  5. (Optional) If you want to prevent future assessments from changing the placement, you can lock the placement. For details on how lock placement works, see Managing a student's learning path settings.

  6. (Optional) If the new placement grade is one or more grades above the student’s rostered grade, the option to Enable Content Bridge will appear. Check this box to assign a condensed set of lessons from the student's rostered grade before advancing to above-grade content. To learn more about this feature, see Managing a student's learning path settings.

     Note

If you are increasing a student’s placement grade in the Math Mastery pathway in Imagine+ Math, first assign the Math Builder pathway and set the placement grade to one grade higher than the student’s rostered grade. This aligns with Imagine+ Math’s recommended practice for managing above-grade-level placements.

  7. Click Update to save your changes.

What happens after you edit a student's placement?

  • The learning path updates immediately to reflect the new placement. If a student is in the middle of a lesson, the change takes effect after that lesson is completed.
  • All records of completed work remain available in the Student Progress report.
  • Newly assigned lessons appear in the Upcoming view of the Student Progress report.
  • Details of the placement change—including the new grade, who made the change, the date, and any enabled settings—are recorded in the Student Progress report.

  • If Lock Placement was enabled, the student's placement will remain fixed and will not be updated by future assessment results until unlocked.
  • If Content Bridge was enabled, the student will first complete a condensed set of lessons from their rostered grade before beginning above-grade-level content.

 Note

For more guidance on advanced learning path settings, see Managing a student's learning path settings.

Caution

  • Manually changing a placement grade after a student completes the Imagine+ Diagnostic (formerly MyPath Assessment) replaces domain-specific placements with a standard grade-level path. If you want the learning path to reflect domain-level results, consider reassigning the Imagine+ Diagnostic.
  • With NWEA or Renaissance integration, manual placements override current assessment-generated placements, but future benchmarks may still overwrite them—unless you lock the placement. If the placement is only slightly off, you can also supplement with lessons using the Assignment Builder.
