In Imagine+ Math, every K–5 student is initially assigned the Math Mastery pathway as their default learning path. This pathway is designed for students who are at grade level or one grade level below their rostered grade. However, Teachers and Administrators have the flexibility to change a student’s pathway to the Math Builder pathway when classroom observations indicate a change in instructional approach is needed.
Note
It’s also possible to change a student’s pathway from Math Builder back to Math Mastery at any time if their learning needs change.
When should you manually switch pathways?
Consider manually switching a student's pathway type in these situations:
- Observation-based need: When a student's classroom performance, participation, or engagement differs from assessment results.
- Instructional readiness: When a student needs additional foundational skill development or enrichment (move to Math Builder) or, conversely, demonstrates readiness for more rigorous, grade-level practice (move to Math Mastery).
- Targeted support: After attempts with customized assignments using Assignment Builder have not met the student's needs, a new pathway may be more appropriate.
Note
Pathway recommendations based on new assessment results may also be provided automatically by Imagine+ Math. Accepting these recommendations is handled through a streamlined process, described in a separate article. Manual pathway changes, as explained here, provide flexibility for teacher-driven decisions based on direct observation and professional judgment
Recommendation
After each assessment cycle, review pathway recommendations and student performance data on your educator reports and Student Placement page to ensure students are benefiting from the most appropriate pathway.
To switch a student's pathway:
- Log in to the Product Portal and select the MyPath Math tile.
- Select a class.
- Click Student Placement in the top navigation.
- Locate the student whose pathway you want to change, click the three-dot menu (
) on the right, and select Assign Builder Path (if switching from Mastery path) or Assign Mastery Path (if switching from Builder path).
- Select the needed Placement Grade from the dropdown menu.
- (Optional) If you want to prevent future assessments from changing the placement, you can lock the placement. For details on how lock placement works, see Managing a student's learning path settings.
- (Optional) If switching to the Builder Path and the new placement grade is one or more grades above the student’s rostered grade, the option to Enable Content Bridge will appear. Check this box to assign a condensed set of lessons from the student's rostered grade before advancing to above-grade content. To learn more about this feature, see Managing a student's learning path settings.
- Click Assign to confirm.
- A confirmation appears at the bottom of the page that says "Placement assigned."
- Locate the student's previous pathway on the Student Placement page, click the three-dot menu (
), and select Deactivate Learning Path.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- A confirmation that the learning path was deactivated appears at the bottom of the page.
- Inform the student about the change, especially if they are mid-lesson, so they understand their new learning path.
What happens next?
- Automated Pathway Recommendations
After each assessment cycle, you may receive alerts (bell icons) when new data suggests a pathway adjustment is recommended for a student. You can review and apply these changes individually or in bulk.
- Manual Changes
Manual changes you make are not overridden unless a new assessment results in an updated recommended placement grade.
- Switching Back
You can manually move a student from Math Builder back to Math Mastery at any time by restoring their Mastery path and deactivating their Builder path.
Caution
Frequent switching between pathways is not recommended. Instead, use custom assignments for targeted remediation or enrichment.
