Switching a student's pathway type in Imagine+ Math

In Imagine+ Math, every student is initially assigned the Mastery pathway as their default learning path. This pathway is designed for students who are at grade level or one grade level below their rostered grade. Teachers and Administrators can switch a student to the Builder pathway when they need a different instructional approach.

 Note

In Imagine+ Math, you can either pause a pathway or deactivate it. Paused pathways are hidden from students but stay visible in educator reports with all progress and usage data, while deactivated pathways are removed from reports.

When should you manually switch pathways?

Consider manually switching a student's pathway type in these situations:

  • Observation-based need: When a student's classroom performance, participation, or engagement does not match their assessment results.
  • Instructional readiness: The student needs additional foundational skill development or enrichment (move to Math Builder) or demonstrates readiness for more rigorous, grade-level practice (move to Math Mastery).
  • Targeted support: After trying customized assignments with Assignment Builder, the student still needs a different type of pathway support.

 Note

Pathway recommendations based on new assessment results may also be provided automatically by Imagine+ Math. Accepting these recommendations is handled in a separate article. Manual pathway changes, as explained here, give you flexibility to act on direct observation and professional judgment

 Recommendation

After each assessment cycle, review pathway recommendations and student performance data in your reports and on the Student Placement page to confirm students are on the most appropriate pathway.

To switch a student's pathway:

  1. Log in to the Product Portal and select the MyPath Math / Imagine+ Math tile.
  2. Open the Student Placement page for your role:
    • Teachers: Select a class, then click Student Placement in the upper navigation.

  5. (Optional) To prevent future assessments from changing the placement, enable the Lock Placement option. For details on how lock placement works, see Managing a student's learning path settings.
  6. (Optional) If you switch to the Builder Path and the new placement grade is one or more grades above the student’s rostered grade, you can check Enable Content Bridge to assign a condensed set of lessons from the student's rostered grade before above-grade content. To learn more about this feature, see Managing a student's learning path settings.
  7. Click Assign to confirm.

  8. A confirmation appears at the bottom of the page that says "Placement assigned."
  9. Locate the student's previous pathway on the Student Placement page, click the three-dot menu ( more-options-icon.png ), and choose how you want to turn it off:

    • Click Deactivate Learning Path if you do not want the pathway to appear in reports.
    • Or click Pause Pathway to hide the pathway from the student while keeping all placement, progress, and usage data visible in reports.

What happens next?

Automated Pathway Recommendations

After each assessment cycle, you may receive alerts (pathway-alert_bell-icon.png) when new data suggests a pathway adjustment for a student. You can review and apply these changes individually or in bulk.

Manual Changes

Manual changes you make are not overridden unless a new assessment results in an updated recommended placement grade.

Switching Back

You can move a student from Builder back to Mastery at any time by restoring their Mastery pathway again and pausing or deactivating the Builder pathway.

 Caution

Frequent switching between pathways is not recommended. Use custom assignments for targeted remediation or enrichment whenever possible.
