Overview of Imagine+ EarlyBird Screener

Imagine+ EarlyBird Screener in Imagine+ Assessment is a literacy screener for PreK–Grade 3 that measures foundational literacy skills. It helps educators identify students who may be at risk for reading difficulties, including characteristics of dyslexia.

Imagine+ EarlyBird Screener is a research-backed literacy screener developed in collaboration with Boston Children's Hospital and the Florida Center for Reading Research.

Key features

  • Foundational literacy skills: The Screener measures key early literacy skills across multiple subtests.
  • Adaptive design: The Screener adjusts subtest difficulty based on student responses for more precise skill measurement.
  • Game-based experience: Pip the toucan guides students through interactive tasks.
  • Predictive indicators and percentiles: Results include predictive indicators and nationally normed percentiles by skill to help educators identify students who may need additional support.
  • Spanish support: Instructions and caregiver guidance for interpreting family reports are available in Spanish.

Administration

  • Locked Mode: Subtests follow a set sequence for standardized administration.
  • Unlocked Mode: Educators can direct students to specific subtests for targeted retesting.
  • Scheduling: Administrators set up screening windows in the Scheduler tool in Imagine+ Assessment.
  • Time needed: Comprehensive screening takes about 20 minutes in PreK, 45 minutes in Kindergarten, and 30 minutes in Grades 1–3.
  • Administration options: The Screener can be administered one-on-one or in a small group with adult oversight.

Student experience

  • PreK–K: Students use interactive tasks with audio support and practice opportunities.
  • Grades 1–3: Students use a streamlined interface with age-appropriate rewards.
  • Pause and resume: Students can leave the Screener after completing a subtest and return later. Their progress saves automatically.

Reports and data

Use the Imagine+ Screener report to monitor completion, review reading skill results, and identify students or groups who may need support. Reports are available at the district, school, class, and student levels, depending on your role.

  • District-level report: District Administrators can monitor Screener completion, compare results across schools, and identify districtwide reading patterns for a selected grade and assessment window.
  • School-level report: District and School Administrators can monitor Screener completion, compare results across classes, and identify schoolwide reading patterns for a selected grade and assessment window.
  • Class-level report: Teachers and Administrators can review individual student results, identify classwide skill patterns, and find students who may need closer review. Results include Predictive Profile results, nationally normed percentiles, and Letter Name and Letter Sound scores.
  • Student-level report: Teachers and Administrators can review one student's Predictive Profile and subtest results across assessment windows, identify skill areas that may need support, and access instructional resources.
  • Predictive Profile: For Kindergarten through Grade 3, Potential for Word Reading (PWR) shows how likely a student is to meet an end-of-year word-reading benchmark. For PreK, Predictive Profile results are available only for the end-of-year Screener and show a Reading Readiness indicator.
  • Percentile categories: Subtest results identify performance as Well Below benchmark (at or below the 20th percentile), Below benchmark (21st–40th percentile), or At/Above benchmark (41st percentile or above).
  • Next Steps Resources: Access Next Steps Resources for lesson plans and progress-monitoring tools that support targeted instruction.
