Understanding the two purpose-built pathways in Imagine+ Math

Imagine+ Math supports a wide range of student needs through two distinct, adaptive learning pathways: Math Mastery and Math Builder. Each pathway is carefully designed to ensure students—regardless of whether they are performing below, at, or above grade level—receive appropriate support and challenge as they progress through their learning paths.

Overview of the two pathways

All K–5 students begin in the Math Mastery pathway to provide immediate access to grade-level content and supports. After students complete a diagnostic or benchmark assessment (such as Imagine+ Diagnostic, NWEA MAP Growth, or Renaissance Star), the program may recommend that students who are two or more grades below—or one or more grades above—their rostered grade move to the Math Builder pathway for targeted remediation or enrichment. Educators can accept or ignore these pathway recommendations or make manual adjustments at any time.

Comparing Math Mastery and Math Builder pathways

Feature Math Mastery Pathway Math Builder Pathway
Purpose Closely aligned to grade-level standards, providing structured practice to build procedural fluency and application. Delivers targeted, explicit instruction and enrichment to address gaps or advance learning for students well below or above grade level.
Recommended Students Students at grade level or one grade below their rostered grade. Students two or more grades below or one or more grades above their rostered grade.
Lesson Style
  • K–2: Story-based lessons, contextual vocabulary, and songs
  • 3–5: Problem-solving, reasoning, and visual models
  • Video-based instruction for new skills
  • Visual models and manipulatives, presented in age-appropriate contexts for all students
Pedagogical Approach
  • Structured, scaffolded instruction
  • Mastery checks and just-in-time remediation
  • Explicit instruction followed by gradual release to independence
  • Frequent mastery checks with adaptive branching for acceleration or remediation
Adaptivity Students can accelerate through concepts or get targeted supports as needed, based on mastery checks and domain proficiency. Frequent checks enable students to rapidly close gaps or move on to enrichment; content is sequenced adaptively per student performance.
Content Presentation Immersive, age-appropriate activities including real-world problem-solving and engaging storylines. All content is designed to fit the student’s age and grade, even when working on foundational material.
Language and Accessibility Supports Complete Spanish integration (K–5), on-screen translation (60+ languages), and text-to-speech (TTS) for accessibility.

How pathway assignment and movement work

  • Initial placement: All students are placed in Math Mastery to begin.
  • Recommendation to switch: After assessment, students who are two or more grades below or one or more grades above rostered grade may be recommended for Math Builder. Educators have the option to accept or ignore these recommendations.
  • Manual changes: Educators can manage a student's learning path settings or change a student's placement grade at any time.
  • Continuous adaptivity: Both pathways personalize lesson delivery in real time, using mastery checks and remediation to target each student’s specific needs.
For a detailed description of adaptivity during lessons, see How Imagine+ Math adapts to student performance.

Key takeaways

  • Both Math Mastery and Math Builder use assessment data and ongoing performance to personalize instruction within standards-aligned, adaptive pathways.
  • Math Mastery provides rigorous, structured practice at or near grade level; Math Builder delivers focused remediation or enrichment for students far below or above grade level.
  • Educators can manage pathway assignments and placement grades at any time within a system that supports evolving needs.
