Viewing Developmental Summaries

The Development Summary gives District Administrators, School Administrators, and Teachers a series of four scores that summarize student progress; A developmental Score, Percentile Rank, Standard Score, and Normal Curve Equivalent Score. Three of the scores are norm-referenced scores, which are widely used in educational programs while one of them is a path-referenced score. The Development Summary allows you to see aggregated and disaggregated development summary data on a selected test and aggregates test data at the Organization, School, class, and student levels. The report access you have is determined by your Imagine Galileo access.

Score Description

Developmental Level Score

This is a path-referenced score. This score indicates a position in a path of development comprised of a series of capabilities or objectives outlining a given developmental area (i.e., Math). The Developmental Level (DL) score provides the foundation for setting performance levels defining standards of performance used in accountability programs.

Percentile Rank

This is a norm-referenced score. For benchmark assessments constructed using the Imagine Learning secure item banks, the percentile rank indicates the percentage of students in the norm group who scored at or below a certain score. The norm group represents a very large group of students across a wide variety of Imagine Learning clients in multiple states.

For benchmark assessments constructed from organization-created items, the percentile rank is an IRT percentile. The norm group for the IRT percentile is the group of students who contributed to the IRT parameter estimates, typically the students in the organization who took the test.

A student’s percentile rank indicates the percentage of students who have traditionally scored at or below the DL score that the student achieved on the test. The comparison group is all students who took Imagine Galileo assessments in the same grade level and subject and at the same time, in the previous year. For example, if a student receives a percentile rank of 75, that means that the student’s DL score on the test was as good as or better than the scores earned by 75% of the students who took Imagine Galileo assessments in the same grade level and subject, and at the same time, in the previous year.

Standard Score

This is a norm-referenced score. This score gives a position in the norm group when the mean is set to zero, the standard deviation is set at one and the distribution of scores in the population for the norm group is assumed to be normal.

For benchmark assessments constructed using the Imagine Learning secure item banks, the norm group represents a very large group of students across a wide variety of Imagine Learning clients.

For benchmark assessments constructed from organization-created items, the norm group is the group of students who contributed to the IRT parameter estimates, typically the students in the organization who took the test.

Normal Curve Equivalent Score

This is a norm-referenced score. This is a normalized standard score with a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 21.06. This score specifies a position in the norm group when the distribution of scores in the norm group is assumed to be normal.
