Caution
This article only applies to organizations who have chosen the default embedded Benchmarks as their placement/assessment method in Imagine Language & Literacy and who have enabled the Reading Level Assessment for their students. This article does not apply to students taking the Imagine Galileo ELA Benchmark or the NWEA™ MAP® Growth Assessment.
After your students have completed the Reading Level Assessment (RLA), you can view their Lexile® measure for each RLA as well as growth in the Lexile measure throughout the year and whether the student is reading above, on, or below grade level.
Teachers can view Lexile information for all students assigned to them.
Administrators can view Lexile data for any student in their school or district, as well as average Lexile measures/changes in Lexile measures per grade and group and percentages of students reading on grade level, above, and below.
To review Reading Level Assessment results:
- Log in to Imagine Language & Literacy.
- If you are assigned to more than one group, click the group at the bottom of the dashboard whose data you wish to view. Otherwise, go to step 3.
- Click the arrow at the top of the Growth widget.
- Click Reading Level Assessment.
Results display. For students who have completed the Reading Level Assessment, you'll see a Lexile measure in the applicable Beginning, Middle, and/or End column for that testing period. You'll also see the start and completion date for each RLA as well as the amount of time (in minutes) the student took to complete the test.
The Target Range column shows the expected Lexile measure based on the student's rostered grade level. If the student's Lexile measure is within this range, the student is considered to be reading on grade level. To the left of each student's name, a color-coded indicator compares their Lexile measure to their grade level in accordance with the color coding in the legend at the top of the report.
Note
Students in Grades 6 and up can only be certain colors.
Sixth graders can never be blue (above grade level) because the Imagine Language & Literacy content does not go above sixth grade. Seventh graders can only be yellow (one grade below) or red (two or more grades below), and eighth through twelfth graders can only be red.
For students in Grade 6 and above, disregard the color-coded performance indicator and focus on the Lexile measure and the Target Range and YTD columns instead.
The YTD column calculates and displays a change in Lexile measures after students have taken more than one RLA. Increases are in green and decreases are in red.
- Click on a student's name to go to the student-level report.
The bar graph shows Lexile measures as the year progresses. The bar on the far left is for grade level comparisons. Blue is above grade level, green (which extends horizontally across the graph) is on grade level, yellow is one grade below grade level, and red is two or more grades below grade level. Underneath the bar graph, the Lexile measures for each testing period display, as well as the Change YTD (if two or more assessments have been taken) and the Target Range based on the student's rostered grade level.Note
You can go from one student-level report to another using the arrows in the top right.
- Compare your students' Lexile scores with the grade-level proficiency ranges below the results table. By clicking a link in the Example Texts column, you can view representative reading texts that correspond to the grade-level range.
To review Reading Level Assessment results:
- Log in to Imagine Language & Literacy.
- Click the arrow at the top of the Growth widget.
- The Growth reports open; click Reading Level Assessment in the top navigation bar.
- The Reading Level Assessment page opens, defaulted to the Status view, which shows the number of students in each testing status (In Progress, Completed, etc.) for each group. Refer to Checking student completion status for the Reading Level Assessment (RLA) in Imagine Language & Literacy for details on this view.
- Click the Gains tab in the View section and make selections in the Grade and Testing Time Periods drop-down menus. This page calculates the change in Lexile measures throughout the year.
The first portion of the Gains tab is a graph that shows the average Lexile measures for the Testing Period(s) you've selected.
The second portion of the report shows Reading Level Assessment gains by Grade.
The third portion shows gains by Group (class) if you are a School Administrator.Note
District Administrators have a slightly different view in the third table. Results list by School instead of Group, but you can drill down to the Group level by clicking on the name of a school.
-
Click the Performance tab in the Views section and make selections in the Grade and Testing Time Periods drop-down menus. This tab provides a color-coded view of the percentages of students reading at different levels (above grade level, on grade level, and below), as indicated by the legend at the top of the page.
Hover over a portion of the bar graph for the count and percentage of students in that performance level.
When comparing two or more assessments (by selecting two or more assessments in the Testing Time Period drop-down), you ideally see students move from category to category as the school year progresses. By the end of the year, you should see less red and more yellow, green, and blue as students' reading ability improves.
In the example above, students have already shown improvement between BOY and MOY; EOY data will populate once students take the EOY assessment.Note
Students in Grades 6 and up can only be certain colors.
Sixth-graders can never be blue (above grade level) because the Imagine Language & Literacy content does not go above sixth grade. Seventh-graders can only be yellow (one grade below) or red (two or more grades below), and eighth through twelfth graders can only be red.
For the upper grades, you may find the Gains tab more informative than the Performance tab.

From any tab, click the name of a group or grade to drill-down into student-specific Lexile information.

You'll also see the start and completion date for each RLA as well as the amount of time (in minutes) the student took to complete the test.
The Target Range column shows the expected Lexile measure based on the student's rostered grade level. If the student's Lexile measure is within the range, they are considered to be reading on grade level.
To the left of each student's name, a color-coded indicator notifies you whether their Lexile is above grade level (blue), on grade level (green), one grade level below grade level (yellow), or two or more grade levels below grade level (red). As previously noted, students in Grade 6 can only be color-coded red, yellow, or green, students in Grade 7 can only be red or yellow, and students in Grade 8 and up can only be red. -
