Before students take the Imagine Language & Literacy embedded Placement Test, Administrators and Educators should understand what the Placement Test test measures, how the test is structured and when the test will be administered.
When the Placement Test is administered
Students who are new to Imagine Learning take the Placement Test only once during the school year—the first time they log in to Imagine Language & Literacy. Students can start and complete the Placement Test at any time and the test window will never close.
The Placement Test is enabled by default and cannot be disabled.
Educators should plan on at least 25 minutes to administer the Placement Test. Because the Placement Test is adaptive, students may take anywhere from 10-60 minutes to complete the test, depending on their skill level. Administrators and Educators can check the status of students while they are taking the test. Administrators and Educators can then review student test results after students have completed the test.
What the Placement Test measures
The Imagine Language & Literacy Placement Test determines students’ proficiency in key skill areas and then places them in the Imagine Language & Literacy curriculum so that they receive the instruction that they need. The Placement Test determines students' proficiency in these skill areas:
- Print Concepts
- Phonological Awareness
- Phonics and Word Recognition
- Reading Comprehension
- Oral Vocabulary
Placement Test results also serve as a baseline, point-in-time comparison point for student growth throughout the school year.
How the Placement Test is structured
The Placement Test includes 13 subtests across these 6 skill areas: Print Concepts, Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Word Recognition, Reading Comprehension, Oral Vocabulary, and Grammar. Imagine Language & Literacy reports results for 8 of the 13 subtests. The remaining 4 subtests are only used to place students appropriately. No student will receive all 13 subtests.
The first subtest that students receive is based on their assigned grade level. As students take the Placement Test, their performance determines which subtest they receive next. Because the Placement Test adapts to the student's skill level, not all students will see the same subtests or the same number of subtests. Students continue to take subtests until Imagine Language & Literacy has enough data to identify where students should be placed.
